Food Industry Stock Management

Being in the food industry Martin's Seafoods had particularly complicated stock management requirements. The stock they buy (whole fish) is manufactured into stock that they sell (fillets etc.), with large unmeasurable quantities of waste product. To further complicate matters, invoices from the fish markets can sometimes arrive one or two days after the stock has been purchased. So measuring shrinkage and calculating weekly profitability was thought to be impossible.

All the other accounting software programs had trouble managing stock in this way. Apart from the usual stock costing mechanisms, Espresso Financials introduced a special stocktake costing mechanism where Cost of Sales is posted when a stocktake is performed. So for the first time ever, Martin's Seafoods would be able to calculate their profitability on a weekly basis and be able to measure stock shrinkage with a high degree of accuracy.

In getting rid of their pervious custom built billing system, a primary concern for any replacement software was that it must be highly reliable and fault tolerant (of users or computers). By using Microsoft SQL Server as its data storage medium Espresso Financials can take full advantage of commit and rollback transaction processing. As a result Martin's Seafoods can be confident of 100% accuracy in their accounting data, no matter what happens.
